One More Game. Famous Last Words.
Some of my favorite people are also my favorite people to beat at a strategy game. Both things can be true.
I love games because they bring people together. There’s something wonderful about gathering with people you love, putting your phones down, and discovering that an adorable five-year-old is a tiny strategic menace. A proud moment. And a humbling loss.
My favorite games are easy enough to get everyone playing, but clever enough to keep everyone interested. Simple rules? Love them. Nothing to think about? I’ll pass. Give me a little strategy, some friendly competition, and a reason for everyone to demand a rematch.
Below are my favorite games for ages 5 to 95, including plenty you can enjoy across generations. Gather your favorite people, and make some memories.
And maybe let the five-year-old explain how you could have won.
The best $7 I spent in 2026. When my six-year-old niece whispered, “Can we play Flip and eat Halloween candy before anyone else wakes up?” I knew we had a winner.
Both of these card games are under $8, and have earned permanent spots in my work bag. You can play either one with 1–8 players and challenge your brain to see things differently; I play solo when I need a reset…timing myself because apparently even my breaks need a personal best.
My favorite game after mahjong, which is high praise coming from me. This one brings 2–6 people together, and this beautiful version is handmade by a small woman-owned business in Utah.
I played this with my grandmother, and now I play it with my niece. If you can count, you can play; here’s a set under $20 and a luxury version for those of us with excellent taste and limited restraint around beautiful games.
Thousands of years later, people are still asking for a rematch. This two-player strategy classic has staying power for a reason, and I’m happy to demonstrate if you have a few minutes.
